‘NEVER COVER AN ASSIGNMENT WITHOUT COLLECTING A BROWN ENVELOPE,’ BONIFACE HAD SAID. ‘IT IS A REAL LIFE SAVER FOR ALL JOURNALISTS IN THIS COUNTRY.’

Ifiok, a young journalist working for the government radio station in Lagos, aspires to always do the right thing but the odds seem to be stacked against him. The government cuts the funding to his weekly radio drama, he stumbles into an affair with a beautiful young intern causing his long-term love to leave him, and kidnappings and militancy are on the rise in the country. When Ifiok travels to his hometown to make a documentary about a band of ex-militants he is forced to confront the ugly truth about the future of his beloved country and his existence within it.

Radio Sunrise is a hilarious yet sobering satirical portrait of Nigeria that fully deserves a place amongst the great works of ‘post-post-colonial’ African literature.

“Isong is a rare talent indeed.” SJ Bradley, editor of Remembering Oluwale An Anthology

“Isong weaves a profoundly personal story of contemporary Nigeria even while dealing with broader societal
and cultural issues.” Chika Unigwe, Man Booker International 2017 judge

Radio Sunrise edition by Anietie Isong Literature Fiction eBooks

Radio Sunrise is a "satirical portrait of post-colonial Nigeria" that follows Ifiok, a young journalist who works at the eponymous radio station, and the events that unfold as his radio drama is cut off (for lack of funds) and his girlfriend walks in on him cheating.

Isong has very cleverly centered and discussed very important issues, some of which are: the "brown envelope syndrome" in Nigerian journalism, the problems of government owned/controlled media, militancy, among others. In this book, Isong unearthed things that some of us would rather look away from, or pretend doesn't exist. All this without seeming for a moment to shove agenda down the readers' throats. Very well done.

A brilliant and funny read. The writer takes a subject as serious as politics and makes it fun yet the message isn't lost. There are many laughs and many foods for thought. I was engrossed till the last page.
