"My chief objection to a quarrel," Chesterton wrote, "is that it ends a good argument."

Junior high aged students will argue (and sometimes quarrel), but they won't argue well without good training. Young teens are also targeted by advertisers with a vengeance. From billboards to commercials to a walk down the mall, fallacious arguments are everywhere you look. The Art of Argument was designed to teach the argumentative adolescent how to reason with clarity, relevance and purpose at a time when he has a penchant for the "why" and "how". It is designed to equip and sharpen young minds as they live, play, and grow in this highly commercial culture. This course teaches students to recognize and identify twenty-eight informal fallacies, and the eye-catching text includes over sixty slick and clever, “phony advertisements” for items from blue jeans to pick-up trucks, which apply the fallacies to a myriad of real life situations.

This text comes in a workbook format with clear explanations and many updated illustrations and examples to insure understanding and mastery. The text aims at the practical application of the informal fallacies through an analysis of current social, commercial and political issues, which are discussed and evaluated. This practical application should insure that students continue to evaluate arguments, detect fallacies and reason well long after the course is completed.

Students master 28 fallacies (such as begging the question, the straw man, ad hominen, et al) by studying many pertinent examples. The text features a variety of

Dialogues
Worksheets
Real-World Applications
Phony Advertisements
Dialectic Discussion Questions
Tests
Fun extras such as a humorous skit for students to perform, and the famous short story, Love is a Fallacy by Max Shulman

The Art of Argument has been revised to include

Improved chapter and unit organization for greater ease of use
Fallacy explanations rewritten for clarity
Many added and updated examples
Ten new and revised advertisement illustrations

Parents and teachers beware--students may use these skills against you!

I like the topic, really like how it is presented, and felt like the students in the class absorbed a great deal of the information.
What I would have liked was more information in the teacher's book, to explain why some of the answers are the way they were. (We wound up deciding, as a group, that the answers were up for debate, since the authors did not choose to support their answers. :D ) The struggle we had was that this was a class being taught by two teachers that were not familiar with the topic any more than the students were. We were all learning together.
So, for this particular book, I think they did a great job. As a curriculum, however, I feel the publisher could do more than simply use a student book with answers fille din. Give the teachers some support.

The Art of Argument eBook Aaron Larsen Chris Perrin Joelle Hodge Reviews

I'd title it as Identifying Fallacies. It emphasizes that arguments are for enlightening the other party or audience on a subject, not bashing them.
It's a very interesting book. Love the fake advertisements in it.
My one star review on this book is only based on the edition and is not reflective of the course content (I didn't make it far enough into the book to review the content.) The edition does not come with a table of contents, page numbers or other amenities available to e-books. Additionally, the book states that it contains 3 sections and six chapters, but these don't appear to be clearly marked throughout. Without a TOC, and page numbers, this book particularly is very difficult to use in many circumstances. For instance, even in the first few pages, this book makes frequent references to items covered in various places in the book with a page number. Without page numbers (or alternatively a hyperlink), it is nearly impossible to access the reference quickly. Likewise, one is not able to switch back and forth to the glossary easily. Additionally, the first page references lists of fallacies placed on the inside covers of the print book for easy reference and study. These appeared to be missing in the digital edition (though it is possible they placed a list somewhere in the book, but without a TOC it is hard to tell). These problems could easily be fixed with the addition of a TOC and page numbers, which would likely make the edition great resource.
This would make a really good text book for kids. Maybe if we were taught this as kids, we would have clearer heads as adults. Most adults lack the critical skills of recognizing false logic in arguments, spend so much of their energy trying to convince each other of this or that, and once convinced, sign up whole-heartedly to spread the same argument around. It's nice to be able to recognize bull-**** when you hear it! This book helps clarify the age-old methods of argument as well as helps one recognize lack of validity when others employ them. Don't drink the....!
I have used Fallacy Detective and now this one. I love the stories and the examples that have you figure out what fallacy you are looking at in Fallacy Detective (with the answers in the back) but love the layout and visual examples of Art of Argument. For now, I have merged the two to help my child learn to identify the fallacies, which can be difficult when first learning them.
Really excellent book. Should be required reading for ALL U.S. citizens! Clearly written. Well organized. Good for all ages, from middle school on up.
This is maybe half a semester long, so I had to supplement to make a year long credit. I however love this, and I would recommend to anyone looking to teach this subject in high school. It's easy to understand, and well written in my option. It's not a curriculum on it's own so beware of that, it doesn't come with everything you will need to teach this subject but it's a great start.
I'm a homeschool mom of 4 and am educating a middle (logic stage) student. I almost hesitated buying this book because of one review that alluded to it being politically slanted. I'm glad I went ahead with it, because it really presents Logic in an understandable way with GREAT real life examples. I think it's quite objective and reasons through the arguments very well and simply. One could still come to their own personal conclusion however they want, the book just points out logistical facts. AWESOME book, I recommend it.
