This book has potential but that's all. At the beginning everything happens too fast, there's no time to build a relationship between the main characters. One thing that bothers me a lot is the manner of speech, the story takes place in Scotland and Amber the female main character is from London but everybody speak like American people, a 500 plus vampire saying "Babe" and "Bro", really? That's very annoying to me. An the sarcasm, almost all the conversations are full of sarcastic remarks, to the point where they stop to be funny and got very, very annoying. I won't continue reading this series I can't take the writing anymore. I gave it 2 stars because all and all the characters are charismatic.

A Job From Hell Ancient Legends Book 1 eBook Jayde Scott Reviews

I did not like Amber as much as I liked Cass. Maybe it was because Amber's jokes were only funny in the first few pages, after that it became too childish. I wanted to whisper to Aiden to open his eyes/nose to notice that she is a teenage slob, who keeps forgetting to wash her clothes and she wears that dirty, smelly clothes... I really think the idea for the story, with the demon girl and Shadow characters, is great it brings a twist to the normal vampire story. This book is good for younger teenagers. I enjoyed the banter and remarks between Cass and Kieran, they obviously adore each other but don't want to admit it. Amber never really uses her "gift" of speaking to those who had crossed over... Cliffhanger ending! All books that forms part of a series should be stand alone books too, and a good ending makes the difference between a good and a great book. I've read the sample of the next book in the series to see where it leads to and the sample of Beelzebub Girl (Ancient Legends Book Two) is way better than the 1st book, so guess what??? I am definitely going to carry on reading this series, despite the abrupt ending of the 1st book, because my favorite characters make their appearance in book 2. Now you see the importance of having the sample of your next book available right after the current one ends...
Despite needing a good line edit, this book is lovely. A girl in her late teens takes a job that seems too good to be true, before her brother dares her to help him on a heist that could solve all their financial woes. Instead, Amber gains an interesting curse that turns her understanding of the world on its head.
Vampires, Scotland, succubi, & a fey called “shadows” feature heavily. There’s also a decent bit of violence, including kidnapping.
Book Review- A Job From Hell by Jayde Scott

In book one of the Ancient Legends series, Amber finds herself in Scotland taking a job as a housekeeper at the McAllister Mansion. She needs the money for college, so she made the decision and will be working for Aidan McAllister for the next two months. Things get crazy when she gets there. The taxi driver refuses to drive up the driveway, so she has to drag her suitcase all the way up to the house. Then she hardly sees her boss. She spends her days pretty much alone in the house. What makes everything better is her brother shows up with another get rich quick scheme. He wants her to help him steal jewels that he found in an abandoned shack in the woods.
When they attempt the theft things don’t go as planned. Amber ends up in the shack and she happens to find a scroll with a bizarre verse and a few gems. Nothing that Dallas alluded there would be. She grabs what see finds and flees the shack. She almost gets caught by a man with a whip of fire.
After that night she sees Aidan more often and meets his brother and friends. She is drawn to him but feels guilty because of her boyfriend Cameron. When Cassandra reveals everyone’s secrets, Amber is shocked. She has accidentally found herself stuck in the middle of a paranormal world. She has received the gift of sight for ghosts and everyone now wants her. She has no clue what she is doing.
She has to make a deal with the shadows to save Aidan. Aidan, Kieran and company have to rescue her from the shadows. Aidan explains that he needs her to go after a book of spells. Amber is confused. She believes that Aidan only wants her for the book. It’s only when Layla attacks her that she believes he really wants her. Now they are partnering up with the shadows to go after the book. Amber has to go to the borders of death to find the location. Of course nothing is ever easy.
The paranormal world the author created was fascinating to me. I liked how the storyline began and evolved. Amber was hired by Aidan as a housekeeper. Turns out he is more than she thought. She also gets pulled into his world accidentally thanks to her brother. This girl has such horrible luck.
The decisions she makes are ridiculous at times. I really got to the point where I didn’t like her. She constantly got on my nerves. When her youth and immaturity showed through, I almost stopped reading the story. If I don’t like the characters it makes it difficult to read the story. She was my least favorite of the bunch. The rest of the characters I liked. They were hilarious. Kieran was a clown and Cass gave it right back to him. Their bickering was one of the highlights of the story. The ending was ok, a little confusing. I hope the next book is better. I give this one a 3 out of 5.
